All fixtures were left in the same locations for the remodel, but the room was gutted down to the studs and re-built into a transforming modern bathroom.
Same fixture locations, new modern bathroom.
Vanity with pink flowered wall paper.
Custom floating maple vanity with drawers, built in frameless mirror. Calm neutral colors. No more pink!
Bathtub with tile ledge
Bathtub with surround and frameless shower doors. Ledge was removed and replaced with a built-in niche on the same short wall (not seen).
Sink and vanity
Wall mounted faucet with stainless steel under mount sink and creamy white Corian counter tops.
Shower fixtures with pink 6" square ceramic tile surrounding tub.
All new thermostatic control shower fixture with secondary hand held shower. No more scalding hot water!
The custom vanity continues to the window wall, encompassing the toilet space. The drawers are handy too. A good way to get some extra storage.
A new wall was added between the bedroom and the living room and a space for a fireplace was created here.
The small, gas custom fireplace was designed to have unusual proportions (high and narrow) to give a special presence and make it a little more interesting for the space. With glass panels replacements around the door, you can now see the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco from the living room!
Original space with existing winding staircase.
Same view without showing the staircase. Black crown molding and base were added to accentuate the room architecturally and coordinate with the black iron window frames. The floor was stained black to ground the room with dramatic contrast with the creamy white walls. The accent color picks up on the exterior building color on the deck, connecting the two together visually.
The frosted, textured glass on the panels around the door were replaced with clear glass to take full advantage of the spectacular views of San Francisco.
The awkward space between the living room and the kitchen was made into an office with floating bookshelves added to give the space more presence.
Existing "office space" between living room and kitchen (in view) with existing crystal chandelier.
More floating shelves were added to help create a special ambiance for what otherwise was an awkward space between the living room and the dining room. The table can be turned and used as a dining space for the occsional small dinner party.
Existing spiral staircase and new walls were created between the bathroom and bedroom with the addition of a small, square connecting hallway. The wall (beyond the arched opening), and seen from the living room, creates a space for art and creates a good focal point when looking in that direction.
Black floating bookcases were added, floor to ceiling, behind the black painted spiral staircase that creates a library effect and helps to incorporate and camouflage the staircase so that it fits the space better than before.
View into the kitchen with awkward column location.
The awkward column is something that needed to be worked with, With a small budget for the kitchen, color and contrast was used to create a dramatic space that hardly appears to be compromised in design. Color is everything here!
This was the way the room looked post demotion, with beige walls and wall-to-wall carpet. This view, into the corner of the space is the focal point for the room. The ceiling was removed, making way for the pitched ceiling that opened up the room to give dramatic height for the space. The window to the left was removed and a new taller, narrower window was installed high up on the same wall to provide a solid wall for the bed placement.
A custom bed frame and floating dresser were designed for this room. Removing the window created a solid wall for the bed and a much better use of space for the room. The carpet was pulled up to reveal white oak floors that were stained dark espresso (and that continue on throughout the entire house).
A little bit of square footage was carved out of the room to give it interest and dimension. The wall was bumped out one foot, creating a niche for the window with a drapery pocket to hide window hardware and create a custom effect. A second niche provided a space for a custom dresser and recessed mirror. Artemide, Tolomeo lights were added above to highlight the two areas, adding a dramatic lighting effect at night.
The "floating" custom dresser fits the niche space perfectly. The mirror opens the space and reflects back onto the niche on the other side of the room.
The closet door, to the left, made the closet difficult to negotiate as clothing were hidden behind the wall. The door was removed making way for custom double plantation shutter doors that also added extra interest for the room. Recessed lighting was added above the doors that wash them with fresh halogen down lights that highlight the doors at night for a dramatic effect..
The closet door to the right was also removed and a set of planation shutter doors were added for a set of his and hers closets. Separating them is a hidden panel door that supports a flat screen t.v. The room was designed to look like a boutique hotel room - relaxing and inviting.
Here you can really see the wasted closet space that was hidden behind the wall between the two closet doors.
Surprises are always fun to add to a room. Raw attic space, made into an office space, is traversed through this hidden panel door with steps up to that hidden room. Every step provides extra storage with a hidden drawer hidden within.
Another foot was carved out of the room to create interest for lit, built-in book shelves. It's precious space to remove, but the results were well worth the sacrifice of space in the room.
Here's the third niche that was created on the wall that created the built-in book shelves. The same Artemide Tolomeo lighting was added above, to wash the books with light at night. There is a lot of dramatic lighting that was created for this room at night!
Here you can see the pitched roofline that was created by removing the flat ceiling. You can also see the hidden pocket door that will be created to enter the officer space.
The office space that was created from a raw attic (no floors, walls or window). It's a special space that is hidden completely and is only revealed when the hidden panel door is opened. The polka dots match the bedroom color, making a subtle connection between the two rooms.
